Oil stick on paper.
This work depicts a young man donning an old sweater unraveling at the collar.
It is interesting how attached we become to objects, even when they become aged or dated. Familiarity trumps the new, such as the old sweater. The frayed collar, thinned material and faded label suggest a replacement to most, yet to the one who lived through the changes, each alteration morphs into a unique and personalized meaning for the sweater.
Life is like that, we stay with situations even when it appears frayed, thinned and faded. And so this work afforded me the opportunity to ponder the benefits and consequences in staying with what feels safe, known and predictable even when the outward appearance suggests a change.
