Over 65 years ago my father, while serving in the Air Force, was stationed in Cheyenne, Wyoming. When on leave he visited the surrounding country where a friend took a picture of him standing along a lonely road somewhere near Laramie. The painting is based on this photo.
In addition to my father being the subject of the picture, I was drawn to the sweeping lines of the gorge and the strong verticals. In the distance a dam was being built while newly laid utility poles were erected waiting for lines to be strung. I imaged great changes occurring during this time, for my father and the community surrounding this scene. On Father’s Day I share a song for my dad, and all fathers, by Chris Rodrigues and the “Spoon Lady” Abby Roach … an amazing musician showing that spoons, washboards, or empty jugs can create passionate, enchanting and captivating music just as a Stradivarius, Steinway or Less Paul.
