Oil stick on paper.
With this painting inspired by Amedeo Modigliani (Portrait of a Young Woman, c. 1918) I played with light as Modigliani was so amazing at capturing. The islands of red float about the blues, purples and yellow greens. I believe in the original painting the woman’s collar is what I interpret as a scarf, regardless of its purpose the flowing warmth pulls the eyes upward or downward. Combined with the glowing area surrounding the woman’s head and shoulders, Modigliani’s red collar/scarf creates optical movement.
Modigliani named more than one painting “Portrait of a Young Woman” and I was unable to find a reference to the original work online.
