I continue to play with sketches based on observations from works by Amedeo Modigliani. I enjoy elongating the anatomy while using blue to accent shadows. Bending the neck along with the diagonal line help in adding movement to the image.
There is somberness to his paintings, which I feel the eyes have much to do with this. Modigliani often painted eyes with a solid color, resembling a mask or ancient Greek sculpture.
The mask-like quality of the eyes capture the duality of seeing – outward and inward at the same time. In 2004 a movie was made about his life including the soundtrack by Guy Farley “When I Know Your Soul, I Will Paint Your Eyes” (you can listen to this music at YouTube by clicking HERE).
