Oil stick on paper. After reading on the life of Chaim Soutine I was inspired to create expressionistic images based on thumbnail sketches. The oil sticks are water based and allowed me to use my fingers to manipulate the paint. First I drew a thumbnail sketch and created a painting loosely based on the sketch. Here a woman waits for her omelet.
The painting moved me to mentally noodle on “anticipation”, how such an experience can be joyful (anticipating the arrival of a loved one) or fearful (anticipating the pain from an upcoming surgery). “Anticipation” in itself is neutral, yet it can be charged with such powerful emotion. It can also shift from pole to pole in an instant as in the painting. Hunger driving desire with the anticipation of an omelet being prepared before her eyes then suddenly she anticipates the eggs being either under cooked or over done … nothing rooted in reality and all imagined.
