Being an artist, one can alter reality so as to create a more interesting image.
Mirror, Mirror …
One such alteration includes the addition of a mirror that shows the back of a figure when looking head-on. In reality, one could not see the rear of a figure as they would be blocking the mirror. By moving the reflection to the side, the viewer can visualize both front and back simultaneously. An example can be seen in Edouard Manet’s “A Bar at the Folies-Bergere”
Ovals
I used this device with “Opal”, which helped to reflect her back along with the repetition of the oval shape (both the figure’s face and the necklace pendant). Weaving these aspects into a painting is one of the many reasons that make we want to create.
Musical Pairing
In these clamoring times, when so many try to gain attention through loud noise, it is heartening to remember that the Littlest Birds Sing the Prettiest Songs (performed by The Be Good Tanyas).
