I’ve never thought that a pet, or person, was the best in the world. Yet one beautiful cat has made me wonder. His name is Keiko, and he died today.
Connie adopted Keiko from a shelter 16 years ago and provided him with all the care and love one could offer. In return, he fully reciprocated.

His presence was singular. At one point, Keiko shared the home with five resident cats, there was always a couple that jockeyed for the “alpha” role, he showed no inclination to be either the top or bottom of their pecking order. If one treaded on Keiko, they quickly understood that it was an unwise move. Not once did I experience him attempting to dominate.
Keiko was a great friend to all he met. He would rub his head on all beings in the house. He and his brother Obi would always sleep in a big ball. When a kitten was added to the family, he was the little one’s shepherd with what seemed like maternal instincts. If someone arrived at the front door, all the cats scattered, except Keiko. He sat not far from the entrance happy to welcome them.
Keiko was, well, Keiko.
Play was unique as well. All the other cats would race around the room chasing a string. Keiko sat in the middle of the fray with his paw extended out front … all the cats expected to catch the string; Keiko expected the string to catch him.
One phase found him wanting to play with toilet paper rolls, so much so, that Connie had to give him his own.

Watch a short video capturing his comic play.
There were many times when I went through a difficult time and Keiko found his way to my side. He curled up on my chest with a purr, calming a troubled churning mind, bringing me back to the present. Rubbing his chin on mine was done with his whole body, giving his all as a needed hug.
So, I feel that Keiko was not the best cat in the world, he was above all else, one of many wonderful parts of my world. Thank you for all the joy and love you brought Keiko. I will miss you. Now when I look in the night sky, I will see Keiko as the star next to his brother Obi, one that shines just a little brighter than the others.

I did not really know Keiko alive, but now I do. You have given Keiko another life to crown the nine just lived out. Kudos to Keiko for the life well-lived.
Greg, This is a beautiful tribute. Thank you for sharing….
