As the winter solstice draws near I look to the ancient need for light while honoring the “darkest” day of the year. “Twice down off a time” bonfires were lit along with candles and giant yule logs during this transitional and festive season. Now one finds large colored bulbs or light emitting diodes strung along the eves of houses, encircling trees or recreating both secular and religious images.
With a camera, umbrella and sniffing dog in tow I snapped a few pictures from the neighborhood. This is an art form that I am just beginning to explore as a way to gather subject matter or to share in their native form.
May your Solstice include a hopeful light.
